In 2023, the DARAJA Sudan service, supported by the German Federal Foreign Office (GFFO) and the Weather and Climate Information Services (WISER) Africa programme, was redesigned as the DARAJA Sudan Emergency Weather and Early Warning Service.

Resurgence is also working with its key partners in Sudan on a DARAJA + AI pilot in Sudan.
This will transform text-based early warning weather alerts into audio messages in local languages, improving accessibility and last-mile communication. This AI pilot is supported through the TECH4Resilience Challenge (an initiative of the Global Resilience Partnership, Gates Foundation and Trafigura Foundation). From 2026, with continued support from the WISER programme, DARAJA will expand its services to include an Extreme Heat component in Kampala, Dar es Salaam, and cities across Sudan.
The programme will engage media and health sectors through co-design workshops, strengthen dissemination via media partnerships, and build media capacity to interpret and communicate heat-related weather and climate information. It will also support community awareness campaigns and the development of extreme heat-focused Early Action Plans.
Our Impact in Sudan
We use a combination of quantitative data and community insight to understand what is working and where systems can improve.

What is Information Ecosystem Mapping (IEM)?
- Mapping information flows: Identifying trusted intermediaries (e.g., community leaders, radio stations), preferred channels (e.g., WhatsApp, face-to-face communication), and communication bottlenecks
- Analysing trust networks: Understanding which sources communities trust and why
- Identifying gaps: Recognising who is excluded and what channels are underutilised
- Creating visual diagrams: Showing relationships between meteorological agencies, media outlets, community networks, and end-users
- Validating findings: With communities, adapting strategies over time that respects cultural and linguistic diversity
