Freetown : Co-creating inclusive early warning and climate information systems
Resurgence has launched a consultation process with key actors in the city of Freetown, Sierra Leone to assess how best to make information flows on a range of climate hazards – floods, landslides and heatwaves – as inclusive, accessible and actionable as possible to all city residents and users.
The consultation will make available to the city an array of open tools and methodologies developed with its partners , the Konkuey Design Initiative (KDI), Nairobi and the Centre for Community Initiatives (CCI), Dar es Salaam in partnership with the Met Office under the award – winning DARAJA project. DARAJA is an initiative of the UK DFID Weather and Climate Information Services for Africa (WISER ) Programme.
“At the heart of the consultation that I am initiating in Freetown this week is an intent to build on the leadership of the Mayor of Freetown, Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr and the participatory approaches to resilience being applied by her under the #Transform Freetown agenda.” Says Becky Venton, Resurgence’s Advisor on Weather and Climate Services.
The consultation in Freetown is supported by the Climate KIC, the EU’s main climate innovation initiative. It the first of three consultations planned for Africa , the Caribbean and South Asia this year with Climate KIC under a plan to scale up DARAJA in alignment with the ambitious Risk -informed Early Action Partnership (REAP) launched at the UN Climate Summit.
