DARAJA consortium partners hold successful two-day co-design workshops in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam
Between the 7th and 15th February, the Resurgence Urban Resilience Trust, Kounkuey Design Initiative (Kenya) and the Centre for Community Initiatives (CCI) held two, two-day co-design workshops in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam respectively.
The co-design workshops, a key step in the pilot design process of DARAJA to introduce daily and weekly weather and climate information services to informal settlements in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam, were well attended by city stakeholders and representatives from both cities. The two-day event brought together weather and climate risk information providers (Kenya Meteorological Department in Nairobi, and Tanzania Meteorological Agency in Dar es Salaam), representatives and residents of informal settlements, city-wide planners and responders as well as local and national media.
The key workshop activities were:
- Initial sharing of the research results and discussion of their implications
- Sharing of possible forecasting inputs and formats of the pilot
- Stakeholder working groups providing practical recommendations on content, standardised terminology and impact descriptions
- Discussion of pilot design options
- Working across all stakeholder groups to ensure linkages are leveraged and gaps closed in pilot design
- Presentation of the timeline for moving the pilot services forward
The overall outcome was the formation of coordination groups with representatives from each stakeholder group, who will continue to work with the DARAJA Consortium Partners in pilot roll-out scheduled for the onset of the major rains in both cities in the coming weeks.
