DARAJA+AI for Sudan Wins TECH4Resilience Challenge
SUDTT-led consortium with Resurgence, SMA, and Andariya selected as a winner in global competition to advance AI-powered climate resilience
November 2025 – The DARAJA+AI for Sudan consortium, led by Sudan Urban Development Think-Tank (SUDTT) in partnership with Resurgence, Sudan Meteorological Authority (SMA), and Andariya, has been selected as a winner of the TECH4Resilience Challenge.
Launched by the Global Resilience Partnership, Gates Foundation, and Trafigura Foundation, TECH4Resilience identifies and supports innovative initiatives that use AI to strengthen climate and disaster preparedness in vulnerable communities worldwide.
Scaling AI for DARAJA Sudan’s Emergency Early Warning System
The winning solution builds on the proven DARAJA Sudan emergency early warning weather service, integrating advanced AI capabilities to enhance climate and disaster preparedness for communities facing compounding crises of conflict, displacement, and climate shocks.
DARAJA+AI for Sudan will leverage artificial intelligence to improve the speed, accuracy, and accessibility of life-saving weather alerts, ensuring warnings reach the last mile through culturally appropriate, offline-first channels that work even in the most challenging contexts.
A Collaborative Path Forward
The TECH4Resilience support will enable DARAJA Sudan to:
- Scale AI-powered early warning capabilities across Sudan
- Strengthen partnerships between meteorological services, technology providers, and community organisations
- Ensure warnings are not just received but understood and acted upon
- Build local capacity for long-term sustainability
The initiative directly supports the UN’s Early Warnings For All (EW4All) Initiative, ensuring that vulnerable populations have access to timely, actionable information that can save lives and protect livelihoods.
Building on Proven Success
Since 2018, DARAJA has reached over one million people across East Africa, demonstrating that inclusive, community-led early warning systems can work even in the most challenging environments. DARAJA+AI for Sudan represents the next evolution of this approach, harnessing the power of artificial intelligence while maintaining the human-centered design principles that have made DARAJA effective.
