Our team worked with meteorologists, scientists, negotiators, risk experts and community leaders to discuss issues central to the Sharm El-Sheik agenda. They focused on the loss and damage agenda, financing for adaptation and resilience, creative storytelling, social tech and inclusive urban early warning for all, through our DARAJA Service and Partnership.

Building Resilience through the Nexus of Urban and Rural Food, Health and Climate Systems
Host: LSHTM (London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine) / Resilience Hub
Summary of event: Highlighting the health implications of climate-driven food insecurity, this session focused on existing programs that strengthen the climate resilience and economic viability of the food supply chain while also improving the livelihoods of small-scale farmers. It looked at the key role that early warning systems play in making the urban-rural supply chain more climate resilient, and the widespread health and environment benefits of including food-systems in Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

Race to Resilience 1: Solutions and Storytelling in the Future
Host: Race to Resilience / Resilience Hub
Summary of event: How does building resilience for 4 billion people by 2030 look like? This is the goal and the question the Race to Resilience (R2R) campaign is trying to achieve and answer. They believe there is a reason why people use storytelling as a resource to talk about climate change and climate resilience, not only to share real work but also to increase conscience, and that’s what they explored in this event. In this session three RTR partners, including Resurgence and their partner, Sudan Urban Development Think-Tank (SUDTT), showcased solution stories they are leading to build and scale resilience on the ground, aiming not only to inspire others into action but to dive into the how. Telling the stories behind their work. This was an interactive session where the public had the opportunity to engage with R2R partners and gain insights into how they were delivering concrete actions, creating real positive impacts on communities’ lives and livelihoods built upon measurable resilience outcomes.

Building community resilience: Moving From Engagement to Action through Social Technologies

Summary of event: Ever wonder how gaming and social technology are part of the climate solution?
Arsht-Rock and Meta hosted a panel discussion to explore how technology can help us build climate resilience in communities around the world. The panel of experts reflected on the innovative solutions that can reach millions of people at once, as soon as possible, equipping them with the tools to build resilient communities. With insights from tech company representatives, game designers, and climate experts, this conversation underlined the importance of innovative solutions and technologies that can inspire climate action.

Understanding Urban Risk

Summary of event: The highly interactive event involved a vibrant pitch session with Global South adaptation entities including Charles Tonui (Indian Institute for Human Settlements), Ericka Lynne Nava (Philippine Action for Community-led Shelter Initiatives) ONLINE, Alice McClure (University of Cape Town) ONLINE and Shiraz Wajih, Gorakhpur Environmental Action Group (GEAG).
Speakers: The session also featured brief presentations from speakers Jesse DeMaria-Kinney (ARA), Aditya Bahadur (ARA), Rosalind West (ARA), with adjudication from Sheela Patel (SPARC) and Mark Harvey (Resurgence).

Dialogue on the Role of Civil Society in Prevention and Response to Climate-Induced Disasters
Host: International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Egyptian Ministry of Social Solidarity Panel
Summary of event: This panel’s aims were to improve the understanding of how local, regional and international humanitarian actors are contributing to reducing climate risks and building climate resilience, including through anticipatory action, nature-based solutions, and climate-smart disaster risk reduction, and what is needed to support a scale-up of this action.
This event sought to explore the humanitarian consequences of climate change and, in particular, climate-induced disasters. In addition, it unpacked: The current and future humanitarian impacts of climate-related disasters on vulnerable people; Actions to support communities to build resilience, reduce disaster risk and adapt to climate change in the face of extreme climate and weather events; The efforts made by civil society in preventing, managing, and responding to climate-induced disasters (humanitarian aid, disaster risk reduction, and development communities) to minimize, avert and address losses and damages.

DARAJA and Early Warning For All in our Overheating Cities

Summary of event: What are the new models for effective and inclusive early warning and action in a world in which over 50% of us already live in cities? This event panel showcased three emerging initiatives of the award -winning DARAJA Service and Partnership that deploy tradition and culture, technology and novel financing models to meet the UN Secretary’s General’s call for Early Warning for All within five years.
