Sought: Intern researcher on open data infrastructure for city resilience

Duration of the Work: November 16th 2020 to January 31st 2021 (3 days a week).
Duty Station: Home based and/or London-based office (ideally UK time zone).

Background
The Unlocking City Climate Information (UCCRI) is an initiative of Resurgence. It is currently funded by
EIT Climate-KIC (EU’s leading climate innovation initiative) under its Demonstrator Programme. The
overarching objective of UCCRI is to tackle the disconnect between the generation of climate risk data
and information at global, regional and national levels, on the one hand, and on the other, its use in
decision-making in cities by key actors across time frames such as long-term planning decisions or
early warning actions.
The Open Data Infrastructure for Resilience Cities (ODIR) component of UCCRI is a partnership between Resurgence, Resilience Brokers, Open North, ESRI, GeoSUMR and the UNDRR Making Cities Resilient Campaign/ Making Cities Resilient 2030 Initiative.
The primary objective of this internship is to provide support in reviewing and writing/rewriting of case
studies relevant to the second phase of Open Data Infrastructure for Resilience Cities (ODIR) in the
context of the newly launched Making Cities Resilient 2030 Initiative. This will involve desktop research,
writing and editing of existing written materials and case studies for digital dissemination that will be
critical to the second iteration of the said publication as an online digital resource.

Scope of Work
The Research Intern, with the support from the Project Manager, will:
- Review and rewrite case studies relevant to the Open Data Infrastructure for Resilience Cities
(ODIR) - Support engagement with ODIR consortium partners and city stakeholders / trial users of the
new digital ODIR online resource, including but not limited to participation in the Making Cities
Resilient 2030 Campaign. - Provide logistical support to organise virtual meetings of the ODIR partners
- Provide communications support to the Resurgence Communications and Marketing Lead
and the ODIR partners to promote ODIR phase 2 and the expertise of the ODIR partners.
Successful candidates will be/ have
- Currently enrolled in a Master’s degree; or have recently graduated from Master’s or equivalent.
Field of study – Urban Planning, Urban Development, International Development, Social
Sciences or equivalent. - Strong interest in the field of urban resilience, climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction
or natural resource management - Strong interest in digital and data infrastructure, capacity building , innovation
dimensions of urban resilience, climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction or
natural resource management - Some knowledge of regional or international organisations involved in climate resilience and
climate change adaptation - An understanding of the industry and market place
- Proven researching experience, intelligence gathering, and writing case studies and reports
- Analytical skills to interpret substantially complex and/or technical information
- Strong writing skills. Experience in writing publications, digital media, journalism is a plus.
- Very good speaking and writing English skills is required
Expected Outputs and Deliverables
WP1 – Deliverable 1: ODIR and Open Data Compass for City Climate Resilience
To review and assess existing case studies in the ODIR publication, research and/or write new case
studies suitable to the needs of the phase 2 of ODIR in the review / editing phase to ensure that best
practices are well encapsulated and adhere to the needs of the target stakeholders.
KPI – EITN07: Success Stories
To assist the Project Manager in writing four (4) success stories as part of the UCCRI Demonstrator
2020 documentation.
Work Arrangement
Due to the current UK government restrictions in London, this role is expected to be work from home
setup and ideally based in the UK time zone. The intern may, however, opt to use the office space and
internet facility provided by Resurgence (depending on the UK government advisory), including
logistical and other support services. The intern is also expected to bring his/her own laptop and mobile
phone. Costs to arrange meetings, workshops, or any travel costs (if any) incurred in the duration of the
project shall be covered by Resurgence.
